I post portrait work occaisionally on my main blog (see link above) but I set up this page to show some more of it in one place.

I find sketches drawn from life an interesting and enjoyable challenge and this is part of what produces the interest and charm of a portrait sketch; it is a dynamic record of the interaction between the artist and subject. By the nature of the process, and practical challenges involved, the result may not even be 'finished', but it will have its own integrity as a sketch and tell its own story. Whether I am moving around on the floor trying to capture the likeness of a toddler, or talking to an older subject as I work, the resulting marks on paper are a particular kind of record of that time. There is the potential to capture something special and uniquely different from the instant in time caught by a camera portrait.

Some work in pastel or other medium is more finished, worked on in the studio.
